June 2026 K-Pop Review: A Month of Mixed Releases
As an avid K-pop fan, I eagerly await each month's new releases, and June 2026 was no exception. However, upon reflection, it's clear that this month's offerings were somewhat underwhelming, especially when compared to the strong releases of previous years. The month felt like it was divided in half, with the best releases concentrated in the first half, leaving a lull in the second half.
One possible explanation for this distribution is the World Cup, which may have preempted music shows and affected release schedules. Nonetheless, it's a bit disappointing to see a lull in what should be the peak of summer releases. I typically love summer in K-pop, but this year's offerings have been somewhat lacking.
My personal favorites this month came from mini albums by SHINee, RIIZE, and Hearts2Hearts, all of which are SM groups. It's interesting to note that these groups dominated the month, even if they didn't always choose the best songs to promote as title tracks. If certain songs had received music videos, my top three picks for June would have been very different, including TWS's 'Dream With Us' and RIIZE's 'Soar'.
However, rules are rules, and to be eligible for my top three picks, a song must have a music video and/or be widely promoted. This left me with an easy choice for number one and less extraordinary tracks for the runners-up. June has historically been a strong month for title tracks, but this year's releases didn't live up to recent history.
In fact, this June was one of the weakest since 2022, despite kicking off with an instant classic hit at the top of the month. Too many songs relied on some of the year's worst trends, including truly awful work from LE SSERAFIM+ILLIT+Katseye, VVS, ATEEZ, Evan, and even AHOF. These songs, along with a veritable fleet of 6 and 7-rated releases, dragged down June's rating.
I can't remember ever writing as many harsh reviews as I have this year, and a good handful of those came from the past few weeks. I'm hopeful that the first few weeks of July will bring some big hits, as the month feels quite barren due to the World Cup. AHOF has a redemption arc on their hands, and I wouldn't be surprised if they pull it off. There are a couple of very nugu debuts that could be good as well, but probably won't be. A promised summer comeback from fromis_9 should also be worth looking forward to.
Apart from that, nothing about July's announced releases has me super excited. I hope that changes soon, as 2026 is on track to be one of the industry's most underwhelming years. Despite the mixed releases, June 2026 still had its highlights. The top three K-pop songs of the month were SHINee's 'Atmos', STAYC's '2 L0VE', and BOYNEXTDOOR's 'Viral'. These songs showcase the diverse and dynamic nature of K-pop, with each artist bringing their unique style and sound to the table. Overall, June 2026 was a month of mixed releases, but it still had its shining moments.
